Going Beyond Research: Reimagining communication systems in the garment manufacturing industry.
This webinar will be anchored on a discussion to understand how M&E can be used to make a tangible impact. We hope to present road-maps on feasible ways to scale-up research to inspire real-world action within any labor-intensive industries particularly garment manufacturing firms. Our past evaluations suggest that the domain of worker well-being that presents many limitations across (in particular garment) manufacturing industries is lack of communication and grievance redressal platforms for workers. We are developing homegrown tools - Inache, that provides a solution to businesses to address these limitations. This tool, backed by rigorous academic research, is a tangible solution for businesses to implement to achieve both worker well-being and business outcomes.
We anticipate participation from business leaders, CSR professionals, development practitioners, and the general public. Through our discussion, we hope to offer a platform to share collective learnings and insights on how organizations can move beyond M&E to create more scalable solutions to achieve impact.

Session Name:Worker Voice: Using technology to drive cultural change in the garment manufacturing industry.
Session Venue:Webinar
Session Date:June 2
Session Time:11:00 am ~ 12:00 pm
Session Details:In 2018, in collaboration with a supplier partner (Shahi Exports), clothing brand (The Children’s Place), and technology solution developer (WOVO by Labor Solutions) we conducted a randomized controlled trial evaluation of an SMS-based worker communication tool. We found that encouragement to use the tool reduced absenteeism by 3-4%. This unique collaboration between a brand, suppliers, a technology solution company, and an evaluation organization offers multiple perspectives and underscores the need for ‘worker voice’ for different stakeholders. Through this webinar, we hope to offer insight into how evaluations, alignment across organizations on sustainability priorities, and technology can be leveraged to increase transparency and accountability within a factory setting. Further, the discussion will address challenges such as low digital literacy among workers and the need for buy-in from all stakeholders involved including workers, management, and factory owners.
